• Bald-faced hornets – 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, they are recognized by their black and white striped bodies. Nests look like large paper footballs with a hole near the bottom giving access to the many cells inside. They are usually located in a protected area, such as a large tree branch, eaves, or the underside of a bench or deck.
• Pipe organ mud dauber wasps – About an inch long and black with a slender segment connecting the thorax and abdomen. They are readily identifiable by their distinctive nests, which are mud tubes that look like pipe organs constructed on walls in protected areas, such as under eaves.
• Yellow jackets – Often mistaken as bees because of their yellow and black bands, yellow jackets are actually wasps and closely related to the bald-faced hornet. Their nests are papery structures with visible cells and located under eaves or benches where they are protected. They also are known to nest underground inside rodent burrows.
